IOCL Pipeline Network

IndianOil operates a 20,000 km pipeline network for crude oil, petroleum products, and gas, with a throughput capacity of 125 million metric tonnes per annum of oil and 49 million metric standard cubic meters of gas per day. In 2023-24, IOCL added 2180 km to its pipeline network.

IndianOil operates a comprehensive network of 29 petroleum product pipelines and 6 ATF pipelines across various regions.

Introduction

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), the largest commercial oil company in India, sought to address inefficiencies and challenges in its pipeline operations. With a vast network, the company required a robust digital solution to enhance real-time data collection, improve communication, and ensure operational continuity. SSM InfoTech Solutions Pvt. Ltd. introduced Connected worker solution to meet these needs.

Challenges

  • Limited Real-Time Visibility Across Distributed AssetsGeographically dispersed pumping stations operated with locally captured data.Central teams lacked real-time operational and compliance visibility.

  • Manual & Non-Standardized Operational RegistersShift logs, LOTO, Safety Bypass, and MOC records were paper-based or siloed. This created inconsistencies, limited traceability, and compliance risks.

  • Shift Handover Risks in 24×7 OperationsManual HOTO processes relied heavily on verbal communication and log entries.Critical updates risked being missed, impacting operational continuity.

  • Complex Safety & Compliance GovernanceTracking live isolations, bypasses, and approvals across locations was challenging.Audit readiness and procedural enforcement required stronger control mechanisms.

  • Lack of Enterprise-Wide StandardizationProcess variations existed across 125+ locations and operational teams.Uniform governance and performance benchmarking were difficult to achieve.

  • Disconnected Enterprise SystemsField execution data was not seamlessly integrated with SAP or historian systems. This limited asset-performance correlation and enterprise-level analytics.
